What if you could build an amazing designer wardrobe on a college budget?

Take a look at these posts I've found online:

Now check out these emails I get:

Something I constantly run into in my line of business: People saying designer goods aren't worth it.

Yet each week I get guys emailing me, disappointed with things they've picked up at fast fashion places like H&M.

If expensive clothes aren't worth it, and cheap clothes are disappointing, what can someone on a tight budget do?

The Truth About High End Clothes, Quality, And Price

Hi. I’m Peter.

I spent 11 years as a high-end menswear designer here in New York City. Designs I’ve worked on have been worn by guys like Ryan Gosling, Kanye West, and Kevin Hart.

I now devote my time helping guys improve their style as a personal stylist and writer of The Essential Man.

Having been on the "making" side of fashion for over a decade, I know the truth when it comes to quality and price.

So let me bust the biggest myth when it comes to shopping for clothes:

Big Stupid Myth: "Designer clothes aren't really that much better, and they're just make things expensive to make more money. You're getting ripped off."

In most cases, this is not true.

Yes, you'll sometimes have that rare case where a designer is arbitrarily making something expensive just because, but they don't last long.

Consumers (YOU), for the most part, are smart.

The Reality: It's difficult to make something good at a low price.

Think about how hard it would be to make a good burger with a budget of $5.

Now imagine getting a budget of $50.

How much better would your burger be?

So I understand why I get at least 1 of these emails from a reader asking me how they can build a new proper wardrobe on a tight budget.

Here's the thing: Just because higher quality clothes cost more, doesn't mean you always have to pay more.

Here’s my dirty little secret: I almost never pay full retail for designer clothes

Over the years, I’ve built a pretty impressive wardrobe of incredible pieces.

A classic topcoat from Helmut Lang (I paid $75), Leather jacket from Robert Geller (Retail: $900, Paid $300), Scarves from Dries Van Noten ($90, retail: $480).

How?

You don’t work in fashion for over a decade without making some good friends in the right places!

Two Words: Sample Sales

Every season, companies sell off samples they show stores, overstocks, etc for MAJOR discounts.

Many of these items are new or near new, as they’re simply on display in showrooms, or sitting in boxes and racks.

I got these new, $600 Common Project loafers for $150!

Two More Words: Friends & Family

Most brands will also let friends and family get first dibs on sales.

Check out this email with one of my friends that led to me getting those Common Projects.

A full 24 hours before it was open to the public!

And it isn’t just sample sales - with friends deep in the fashion world, I’m always getting emails and texts letting me know all my favorite shops have gone on sale. Shops like Uniqlo, J.Crew, and my all-time favorite, Mr. Porter.

I know, it’s totally unfair, isn’t it?

But it doesn’t have to be.

Today, I want to invite you into my inner circle and give you the same opportunity to get these great deals on clothes so you can look good.

Frequently Asked Questions

“What if the stuff isn’t really my style?”

All picks and brands are Essential Man approved. That means if you like what I've been writing about, you'll find something that suits you.

I’m not gonna be sharing sales from super ugly/weird brands just because they're heavily discounted.

I’m still sticking to my style philosophies of essential, timeless, styles, and refined trendy pieces.

You’ll get a mixture of sales for timeless styles from brands like J.Crew, Uniqlo, Bonobos, Levis, alongside brands that might push your comfort zone a bit, like Robert Geller, Saint Laurent, ACNE, with advice on how to wear it.

“I'd be interested in getting on the VIP Shopper newsletter, but are these sales typically only in person and in New York? In my experience, these sample sales are very rarely, if ever, available online. “

The majority of the deals and savings in the newsletter will be online. When it comes to in-person sample sales happen, locations are always changing. For the most part, you’ll find them in major cities. A lot of the sample sales I’ll list are in places like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Paris. I’m working on getting notifications of more cities around the world.

Designers in the past have also held online sample sales. I’ll also be working with my network to broker more of these in the future.

“I don’t live in the U.S., will you be linking to sales for stores outside the U.S.?”

The Essential Man has readers around the world.

However, there are so many stores, brands, etc. outside of the U.S. it would be difficult for me right now to search and link to all of them.

I don’t like recommending things I don’t have experience with, which is why I’m not currently recommending international brands I haven’t worked with before. But there is some good news.

Most of these sites have international outposts or have low international shipping rates. Sites like Mr. Porter are amazing.

With the money you save on these clothes (hundreds of dollars!), paying a bit extra ($10? $20?) for international shipping is totally worth it.

And remember, you have 60 days to try it out. If you’re not happy with the VIP newsletter, just shoot me an email at peter@theessentialman.com and I’ll send you your money back.

For The Cost of A Cup of Coffee, How Much Money Will You Save This Month?

Membership is just $2.50/month.

If you’re snobby about coffee like me, that’s not even enough to buy a nice cold brew at my favorite place, La Colombe.

In just one email from a friend I saved $450 on beautiful, made in Italy loafers from Common Projects!

That’s 180x the investment of joining this newsletter.
